Hey Caleb!

We're so thrilled that your Peru experience was as life-changing as it sounds like it was. It also sounds like John Janovic is someone we should meet someday!

Way to go, getting the most out of your Peruvian adventure... And good luck in your senior year! Stop by and see us any time, okay?

Have fun,
John & Mallory

Caleb: I am beyond thrilled that you are having a great experience in Peru. As I mentioned to you & your parents before you left - John is truly one of the most amazing people I have had the chance to know...and we have never even met! I cannot wait to meet up upon your return to learn more about your adventures. I hope you are taking loads of pictures. Have fun - be safe!

Final Week in Peru (Week Five)

My final days in Peru are here, and I am happy to be returning to my home. However, I will miss Peru and all the people here that I have become great friends with. My last night in Vita Bamba was the night of the Geometridae Project. I collected all the Geometridae moths from the light trap in thirty minute intervals. I had around forty different species by 1:00 AM! It was sad taking down camp the next day, but I know that Vita Bamba has a lot more in store for itself.

We had a giant BBQ at Joh… Continue

Viviendo en la Selva (Week Four in Peru)

"Living in the Jungle"

This week, we have been staying in our field camp in Vita Bamba. The students from Cusco arrived a few days ago, and there are twenty of us now! We have spent most of this week focusing on transects out in the rainforest. We hired a local guide, Wilber, and he has been cutting small trails for us in order for us to collect specimens to determine tree species. We measure out fifty meters, and we collect samples from the living trees that are within one meter of the tape. Y… Continue

"Vita Bamba" (Week 3 in Peru)

(NOTE: Caleb has been at camp in the rainforest and unable to timely post his blogs. This blog was written the day before he left on his most recent trip to the field, Wednesday, July 15.)

My main focus for this week has been preparing for our field research in Vita Bamba. However, I would first like to comment on one of the most interesting discoveries I have made in Peru: the people. Upon first arriving in Quincemil, most of the locals were cold and unaccepting of me. I was often called a "gr… Continue

¡Bienvenido a Quincemil!

(Week Two in Peru)

On Saturday morning, John, Clayton, Paco and I flew out of Lima and into Cusco. We met up with another member of the AABP-BRIT team, Jason Wells, and we spent one day in Cusco purchasing rubber boots, Alpaca sweaters, water and bread for the seven-hour ride to Quincemil. On Sunday morning, John, Clayton, Paco, Jason, Jason´s wife and daughter, Nick (A 26-year old Pinhead Volunteer) and I piled into a van for the long-awaited drive. After about three hours of winding mountain… Continue
