Hunter: Can you try posting your reports via the "blog" button - and then on the upper right "add a blog post?" This way it will publish to the homepage for everyone to read. I am re-posting them for you...but it would be better if they posted from you.

Thanks. Glad all is going well. Sounds like an amazing experience!

Sunday Blog:06/28/2009
This week was yet another awesome week working at the zoo. This week started with a chores to be completed on Asia trail. On Asia trail I was able to interact with the otters and observe some of there rituals. I had to get one otter to take a medication for apatite by hiding it in a sardine so that he would not find it. I found out that at the zoo that every day each animal gets some kind of enrichment. Giving them their enrichment is one of my favorite aspects because you are allowed to come up with what ever you may that you find would be“enrichment” for the animal. I was able to stuff all kinds of fruit into a piece of PVC pipe and watch the sloth bear extract the fruits like he would in the wild. I have been working with the animals a lot in the since that iv been in charge of cleaning many a stall, and all things related, and now I feel like I have a far greater understanding of how the day to day lives of these animals is very unique. I attended an intern networking meeting at the Smithsonian castle, where I met the elite of the Smithsonian directors, and many fellow interns. During my stay here, the Smithsonian is holding a folks festival, so far it has been very exciting. There are a lot of progressive green technologies that I have come across there, not to mention lots of up beat music. One of my fantastic jobs this week was to sort cheetah fecal, may not sound great, but never the less it was interesting. What we are doing is taking the samples to the “waffleizer” that’s not the correct way to spell it, but I like to think so. Any how, it is basically a giant freezer that drops to extremely low temps that in effect removes all moisture from the sample. This leaves the samples in a powdery form, they can then be analyzed by the vets to check for hormone peaks, among other things, and then we can try and match that info to recorded behaviors of the cheetahs we have observed. And finally I helped Craig try and get the cheetah running system up and running by repairing pulleys, we didn’t have every thing we needed but we should soon. I can’t wait to the cheetahs run. Well so far I been having a blast, and I will try and get some pictures up for every one to see.

Hunter: Thanks for the post. For the future, you can post your own blogs - which may make things easier for you...no need to post them to my page. Using the tab at the top that says "Blogs" you can post your "Letters from the Field" directly to the blog roll. That way it looks like it comes from you. I posted your first post up on the blog roll just to get it started. I hope this makes sense. Sounds like you are learning lots - pretty exciting.

Welcome Hunter!
Ahh yes, Well I had a good week leading up to the 4th of July, I have really taken a liking to the friendly people who I work with at the zoo. Makes it a lot more fun when everyone is joking around. This week consisted of course of stall cleaning and such, but I got to try out demo this week with the sloth bears. Demo is basically enrichment for the bears, because, by nature sloth bears dig up and eat termites where they live in Sri Lanka. Here at the zoo they have built a fake termite mound that has a hole that leads to the outside wall. That’s where I come in, I connect a tube into the hole, and then with a crate of mealworms (we can’t have termites of course) I put them in my hands so the people can see and the bears suck them out with their extremely fleshy lips making them like giant vacuums. It’s actually very neat. The reason for their fleshy lips is because they have very little nerve endings, thus they can handle the stings of the angry termites with far less suffering. The 4th of July was wild, I went at saw the rehearsal at the Washington memorial on July 3, and there was still a massive crowd. I t was fun they had all kinds of talented musicians, and of coarse sesame street. On the 4th, I helped Leslie set up for her party; it was fun to cook and such. That night the fireworks were spectacular from her roof that has an absolutely unbeatable view of the action. (Sorry was lame and didn’t get any pictures) Then I went out on the town and simply enjoyed the primo people watching with my friend David, who is a intern at the I.T. department. Washington is proving to be a very fun city, iv been attending Sunday drumming jams on sixteenth street, which is where all the people from that neighborhood come together and drum till dusk, and there dancing and soccer, and I got to do some slack lining with some folks I met, but a very fun experience indeed. Well terrific week, defiantly.

The zoo is beginning to feel more and more like home; it has been amazing to be working with such awesome animals. This past week we had another appointment with the vets, this time it was Draco again, the purpose of the visit was because we had suspicion that his teeth were in less than great shape, we were right because when the dentist took a look, he found five root canals, yikes! When in comes to waking up from anesthesia Draco never ceases to amaze me, he was up and beating up his brother… Continue

Hello one and all,
This is Hunter blog report on the past week at the National Zoo. The week started fairly normal, you know got up around 6 and made my way to the zoo. The city is very pleasant that early in the mourning. I always stop and get some rainbow sherbet to kick start the day, mmm..delicious. Got there and I saw Tumia, she was doing sun salutes, or at least that’s what it looked like to me. Wayne finally returned from is vacation, I was glad because I was begging to miss his random br… Continue
