Lobo: Thanks for the blog post. Next time can you post it to the "blog roll?" On the main navigation at the top here, click "blogs" and then on that page on the upper right, click "add a blog post." You then type in your blog and at the bottom right click "publish." This way it will publish right to the homepage for everyone to read. Thanks - I re-posted this first one, but it looks like it came from me rather than coming from you.

Glad all is well in SF. How was your first weekend? I hope all is well. Call if you need anything. Have fun - SF is such a great city.

Best.

Hey Lobo! Welcome.

1st week at California Academy of Sciences

wow, ya. Here in the big city. Fun time, got here with minimal hassel, only got lost like 3 times so a good experiance. Cal Academy is an amazing place, lots of cool stuff going on around. Its actually really funny, it doubles as a museum in addition to being a research place, and it triples as, get this, a nightclub! How awesome is that! The museum is also a nightclub with DJs and lots of alchohol and all, fun stuff. Sadly they do check ID so i can't attend. But, while i have been here i haven't really learned much yet. So far all i have done is practice mounting the ants and turning them into specimens, and if you have ever tried getting an ant into the right position using tweezers after the ant has been in rigour mortis for a few years without breaking the parts, let me tell you it is a difficult and frustrating job. Especially when the ant's legs are sometimes litteraly the size of a pinhead (no pun intended, also i did do a compairison so ya literally the size of a pinhead). It would make Buddha scream in rage. So hopefully now that i kinda have the hang of that i'll begin a real project next week. I think it has something to do with disecting frog stomachs and seeing which ants are in the stomach, because the frogs get poison from the ants. Then i will be comparing the ants to frog stomach ants in another place (the first is undergoing construction and the habitat is being destroyed so they want to know if it is the same endangered poisonous ant species or a new one, also if the ant population is being affected). Also Brian Fisher is a great guy, really cool. I also get to join a summer program here kinda, i get to attend all the lectures and seminars without doing any of the work so it works out beautifully for me. Thats really interesting so far. I'm looking forward to that, the people in that group are also really cool. They are mostly undergrads so roughly in the same age group, so it works out really well. My one problem is that i still after four days don't have a security badge so everytime i need to enter the building it is a hassel, but the sneaking in thing is working out ok, security has only gotten made a few times. So ya thats my experiance for now. Best of luck to everyone else.

P.S. My camera is MIA so no pictures for a while, but i will post them ASAP, but that might be a while.

Final Week at California Academy of Sciences

Alright well sorry that this is being posted on Monday, but with traveling back and whatnot i didn't have a chance on Sunday. This Wednesday i finally finished mounting all the ant bits! Took me quite a while, but i ended up getting all 283 ant specimens onto those tiny little triangles. Unfortunatly, due to time constraints i wasn't able to start the next part of the project. Neither I nor Brian wanted me to start a part of the project and be unable to finish, so i stopped at mounting. So for T… Continue

Week 4 at Califorina Academy of Sciences

ok well its been a fairly good week. I'm making a lot of progress on mounting up all my ant specimens, i have somewhere in the range 160 mounted so far, but i still got a ways to go unfortunatly. I did get to meet another high schooler working on ants, althoug his work is in florida. He was a really cool guy and i'm looking forwards to maybe working with him later on in life. The high light of my time here did occur on Thursday however. So as some of you may know the museum i work at is a night… Continue

Week 3 at Califorina Academy of Sciences

Ok well this week was an improvement on last week. I finally got through all 284 frog specimens which qualifies as a good job. I have begun mounting my ant specimens, which is somewhat painstaking but i am getting a lot better at it. This week i finally got a chance to check out the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), which was originally suppolsed to be what i would be working with, but i missed getting trained by the person who was doing it beforehand. I gotta say though, i'm really quite angr… Continue

Week 2 At California Academy of Sciences

ok. well San Fran is a really nice city. its kinda gloomy (only been 3 sunny days so far), but its still cool. I've finally started on a project! i'm going to be looking at the relationship between some frogs and ants. We think that the frogs get their poison from some ants, so i get to try and prove it. Unfortunaly, this means i have spent the last week looking through 142 frog stomachs/vomit and intestines/fecal matter. After i get that done, then i'll have to mount them all and then identify… Continue
