I´m so glad I decided to choose to come to Peru. I´m already discussing with John other scholarships and grants to get me back down here next summer! Thanks for the opportunity!

So far my first week working at the Smithsonian Zoo has been a very enriching experience, being in such close proximity and being able to study cheetahs in person in certainly amazing, and the people I am working with are very knowledgeable in the field and are also a lot of fun to be around. I’v already see two cheetahs go under anesthesia and then have their monthly check up with the vet. This is a truly amazing process to see take place. I was exposed to all kinds of procedures like inspecting the inside of Tumia the Cheetahs stomach, looking for potential ulcers, as well witnessing a new anesthesia technique take place. I have been assigned by my head super visor, a paper that must address how recording water intake of Cheetahs can possibly be a early indicator of early sages of renal insufficiency(kidney failure), and I have already had the chance to have a one on one meeting with a trained vet at the zoo. Along with all of these interesting projects, I have also been provided the chance to work around the animals, carrying out keeper duties with Craig, and not only with cheetahs, but a variety of Asian species at the zoo. Such duties as feeding, and shifting the animals, wile Tumia was at the vets, I even got to pat her, which was a very memorable experience for sure. I have very much enjoyed my first week at the zoo, along with being very excited about the city of Washington D.C., and am glad to have the opportunity to be working with such outstanding creatures.

Hey Sonchia, sorry I haven't had much for internet access lately. I arrived in D.C I think three days ago, the city is beautiful, Leslie is great and we went to get a bite last night. As for the zoo, Craig is very fun to work with and a great guy. Actually today is when we put Tumi the Cheetah under anesthesia. It was very interesting; to see the cat up close like that is really something else. I got to see them go into her stomach and pluck samples and though I didn't know a whole lot about what was going on it was still amazing. Craig is having me write a report on renal disease in cheetahs, and how to detect it early, so that should be interesting. All in all I have had a really great time so far.

Hunter: Week Three, Smithsonian National Zoo

Ahh yes, Well I had a good week leading up to the 4th of July, I have really taken a liking to the friendly people who I work with at the zoo. Makes it a lot more fun when everyone is joking around. This week consisted of course of stall cleaning and such, but I got to try out demo this week with the sloth bears. Demo is basically enrichment for the bears, because, by nature sloth bears dig up and eat termites where they live in Sri Lanka. Here at the zoo they have built a fake termite mound tha… Continue

Caleb: Week One, Andes to Amazon Program

"We're Going to the Jungle, Boys!"

My first week in Lima, Peru has been a week of preparation. Dr. Janovec picked Clayton (my fellow intern) and I up at the airport on Thursday night. Since that night, my life has been forever changed. Within only minutes, I realized that being allowed to work with Dr. Janovec was not only a privilege, but an honor. From getting to know him over the past few days, I learned that behind his nutty enthusiasm, is a unique wisdom and love for botany.

For the first… Continue

Lobo: Week One, California Academy of Sciences

wow, ya. Here in the big city. Fun time, got here with minimal hassel, only got lost like 3 times so a good experiance. Cal Academy is an amazing place, lots of cool stuff going on around. Its actually really funny, it doubles as a museum in addition to being a research place, and it triples as, get this, a nightclub! How awesome is that! The museum is also a nightclub with DJs and lots of alchohol and all, fun stuff. Sadly they do check ID so i can't attend. But, while i have been here i haven'… Continue

Hunter: Week Two, Smithsonian National Zoo

Sunday Blog:06/28/2009

This week was yet another awesome week working at the zoo. This week started with chores to be completed on Asia trail. On Asia trail I was able to interact with the otters and observe some of their rituals. I had to get one otter to take a medication for apatite by hiding it in a sardine so that he would not find it. I found out that at the zoo that every day each animal gets some kind of enrichment. Giving them their enrichment is one of my favorite aspects because you… Continue
