Week Six: Tucson

This week brought my internship to a close. Here I am back in Telluride. The six weeks went by pretty fast and I know that my final two weeks of summer will go even faster.
However it was a pretty normal week in the lab for everyone, including me. I mostly mounted cores this week with a little bit of measuring. I finished my paper and I thought it turned out well. My mom did find several errors though. I added some pictures and figures so it's nice and colorful.
With the wood, I believe that the… Continue

Week Five: Tucson

Monday as well as my fifth week is drawing to a close. I spent the majority of this week working in the lab, measuring and mounting. I am halfway through the site we collected from Tsegi Canyon in the Navajo National Monument, which was probably my favorite site. Some of the cores that I know I took came out all twisted. Some of them I couldn't untwist with the steam and has to break them instead. It was sad. Most of the trees are pretty young, but some of them have very tight rings and go back… Continue

Week four: Tucson

We didn't go into the field this week, unfortunately. So this week I was more limited to the indoors. However we did have a good time doing work in the lab. I was constantly either mounting cores or measuring them. The mounting is not exciting, but if you get into a nice rhythm it is enjoyable. It's like arts and crafts all over again, playing with wood and glue and tape. The amount of mounted cores is growing quite large and there are still eleven more sites to be mounted. All of it should be m… Continue

week three: Tucson

The past week has been really good. The highlight of the week was when Dan and I returned to the field on Tuesday. We were joined by our lab mate Amy and the other post-grad working on the Monsoon project, Brittany. It was really nice. The site was just below ten thousand feet near the top of Webb peak in the Pinaleno mountains, just west of Safford, AZ. It was a prime 73 degrees, with the occasional sprinkling of rain. We cored about 21 Douglas Fir in the span of three and a half hours. The maj… Continue

week two: Tucson

I have just completed my first week in Tucson. You could say I've acclimatized to the heat, but that doesn't make it any cooler. Additionally it's monsoon season, so several afternoons a week clods roll in with thunder and lightning and a little rain to keep things less hot.
Upon our return from the field, it took Dan and I a couple days to settle in to the lab. But we are rolling now, processing tree cores. I am busy inventorying, mounting, and measuring. The inventory consists of organizing an… Continue
