This week has been a combination of all sorts of lovely events. Missing my last project/team. Searching for a new. Finding and participating my new one. My cousin coming to visit SF for the weekend from Seattle. Learning and basically getting ALL of my questions answered about flight traffic control and weather conditions relating. And trust me I have a ton of questions. Trying to get a joke about dartmouth or engineering or helicopters (if you have one PLEASE tell me, it's a requirement of this…

This week brought my internship to a close. Here I am back in Telluride. The six weeks went by pretty fast and I know that my final two weeks of summer will go even faster.
However it was a pretty normal week in the lab for everyone, including me. I mostly mounted cores this week with a little bit of measuring. I finished my paper and I thought it turned out well. My mom did find several errors though. I added some pictures and figures so it's nice and colorful.
With the wood, I believe that the…

This week was my favorite so far. I was called upon to solder every time they needed someone because I am the "expert!" No, kidding, but I did get plenty of practice in. And we had to give a final presentation which was interesting for me because I haven't been there from the beginning. But I went along with it and realized most of the work had actually been done in the last two weeks, while I was there. So that was good to hear. My laser board ended up working perfectly, as did the work on the…

"Each Time we look out and realize that the world is beautiful, we are participating in The Great Turning."
-Julia- a student of Joanna Macy
I began with the above quote because I believe that THE WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL and it pleases me to know that I am participating in something new and revolutionary just by enjoying the beauty and joy around me . (The Great Turning refers to the steps humans are taking to heal our existence on earth).
I experienced a lot for the first time this week including:…

This past week I have been at Carnegie Mellon University west at NASA Ames. There are about eight interns working on different aspects of a Mars rover. Right now we are working on the finishing touches because this is their last week. The finishing touches include a robotic arm, a soil collector, and a laser pointer. Some of the programming they are doing is beyond me, but going into this, they didn't know what they were doing either, which made me feel a little bit more confident.
I am learning…

Monday as well as my fifth week is drawing to a close. I spent the majority of this week working in the lab, measuring and mounting. I am halfway through the site we collected from Tsegi Canyon in the Navajo National Monument, which was probably my favorite site. Some of the cores that I know I took came out all twisted. Some of them I couldn't untwist with the steam and has to break them instead. It was sad. Most of the trees are pretty young, but some of them have very tight rings and go back…

Hi'ya. That's the Scotish greeting here.
The past week flew by just quickly as the three before. I've been spending most of my mornings and afternoons in Cullerne gardens hoeing the fields, weeding out nettles from the fields, tending to the peas, and picking the runner and french beans in the poly tunnel. I still can't get over the fact that 80% of the soil is sand, especially after harvesting a mountain of beans from it. I'm hoping to have a part in "feeding the plants" which means spraying l…

And it’s all over! That was WAY too fast! I can’t believe it. This week was insanity from the get-go knowing that it was my last and aside from packing and just making sure that I get home alright I have to get all this work done! Don’t worry. I did and in doing so ended one of the most amazing experiences of my life on an incredible high note.
So this week was basically spent in Dr. Tramo’s and my office doing lots of coding on MatLab so that we can analyze the data. I have a copy of the code a…

Through out my stay in the Miami-Dade area I have bestowed a new prospectus while submersing in the large city. We all recognize Miami as an epicentric coastal city that alone holds more residences than Colorado. The home of Scarface, Dan Marino, and the TV show Flipper. Its one of the many beautiful resort areas to relish in during vacation. Its gorgeous long stretched Miami Beach and the night life of Ocean Drive. Miami certainly didn’t faultier in excitement. Each day withheld a new challenge…

I have spent another exceptional week in Miami indulging in new experiences every day. I continue to stay at the house take care of the dogs that are contingent upon me and fulfill my daily chores at home and through work. I make an attempt to play basketball daily but isn’t always possible. During some portion of the day once I’ve completed my work I try to make time to swim in the ocean or sit on the beach. The beach that is closest to the NOAA lab is called Virginia Key beach it’s a newly ope…

We didn't go into the field this week, unfortunately. So this week I was more limited to the indoors. However we did have a good time doing work in the lab. I was constantly either mounting cores or measuring them. The mounting is not exciting, but if you get into a nice rhythm it is enjoyable. It's like arts and crafts all over again, playing with wood and glue and tape. The amount of mounted cores is growing quite large and there are still eleven more sites to be mounted. All of it should be m…

Week five went by so fast; hard to believe it’s over. I found out that Dr. Simmerling is out of the lab for the rest of the time I’m here, but we can still work together. He keeps emailing me with a list of things to do. I feel I’m getting the hang of the RNA repairing, however there is only so much I can do; all of the readings over RNA said there is still no real way to fully repair it. This week I have been looking at RNA hairpin folding, this is where the RNA helix folds into a hair pin like…

Alright well sorry that this is being posted on Monday, but with traveling back and whatnot i didn't have a chance on Sunday. This Wednesday i finally finished mounting all the ant bits! Took me quite a while, but i ended up getting all 283 ant specimens onto those tiny little triangles. Unfortunatly, due to time constraints i wasn't able to start the next part of the project. Neither I nor Brian wanted me to start a part of the project and be unable to finish, so i stopped at mounting. So for T…

Sorry that this is in on monday again, but last night was hectic, on top of getting home late from Dallas, the power in the town i live in whent out due to electrical storms. However this past week was fairly unieventful and not as full as learning as other weeks have been. this week Perry and I worked on labeling collections, and a Video. The extent of learning this week was done through the labaeling of the specimins. When labeling I had to research the correct family name based on the genus a…

Well, it figures that the week before I leave is the longest. I didn’t officially have a day off until today. All week I worked to try and finish up the necessary math to be able to write this paper. Unfortunately, I also had to balance setting up the computerized recording system for the NICU (Neonatal [babies] Intensive Care Unit) study.
We finally got all the equipment taken care of and installed on to the computer we’ll be using (another Mac! Ugh!) so this week was all about teaching people…

This week I swam with some friends in the Findhorn River, had many jam sessions (a couple which included a dijareedo) and learned about ecological home building.
Today I woke up, went on a long run, came home to meet with Colleen Gardner to walk to Findhorn Village for a bowl of classic Skink Chowder, hung out on the beach and then made cookies from whatever I could find in the food shed. Then took the cookies to dinner with a friend in Craig's Whisky Barrel house. Great Day, just like everyday…

My final days in Peru are here, and I am happy to be returning to my home. However, I will miss Peru and all the people here that I have become great friends with. My last night in Vita Bamba was the night of the Geometridae Project. I collected all the Geometridae moths from the light trap in thirty minute intervals. I had around forty different species by 1:00 AM! It was sad taking down camp the next day, but I know that Vita Bamba has a lot more in store for itself.
We had a giant BBQ at Joh…

"Living in the Jungle"
This week, we have been staying in our field camp in Vita Bamba. The students from Cusco arrived a few days ago, and there are twenty of us now! We have spent most of this week focusing on transects out in the rainforest. We hired a local guide, Wilber, and he has been cutting small trails for us in order for us to collect specimens to determine tree species. We measure out fifty meters, and we collect samples from the living trees that are within one meter of the tape. Y…

This third week in Miami passed exceptionally fast. I have always enjoyed its beauty and vibrance through each passing day. I continued this week working on metadata files as I had done the previous week. My mentor Derek was away doing research in the Caribbean. This provided me a great opportunity to work along side other NOAA staff members and aquatint myself with them. Primarily I worked alone vigorously composing a finalized metadata report but I also had adequate time working with Judy Gray…

The past week has been really good. The highlight of the week was when Dan and I returned to the field on Tuesday. We were joined by our lab mate Amy and the other post-grad working on the Monsoon project, Brittany. It was really nice. The site was just below ten thousand feet near the top of Webb peak in the Pinaleno mountains, just west of Safford, AZ. It was a prime 73 degrees, with the occasional sprinkling of rain. We cored about 21 Douglas Fir in the span of three and a half hours. The maj…
